My Sweet September

I love the sound of September – we are that much closer to fall! I think I can make it until September 22nd, the first day of fall. The sweet cool breezes of September are slowly making their way down through the woods, swirling around the trucks of trees, and the leaves just beginning to turn to beautiful yellows, oranges, and reds….HELLO?! Honey, you’re in Houston and there’s not even a sign of a glint of brown in one leaf. Sigh. Oh well, the cold is coming right?  In the meantime I’ll be sweating it up, but at least this month has left me with a few fresh goodies that will help me suck it up while I (still) reach for my sunblock.

Basil Oh, I have the PERFECT pesto recipe for that!
Beans           Beans! Beans! The magical fruit! The more you eat, the more you…
Bell Peppers          Roasted Stuffed peppers anyone? There’s some meaty cheesy goodness!
Cantalope             Last call! Eat ‘em up quick because this is the end of their season
Corn Thank God, because I just bought some last week…does that count?
Cranberries          The perfect cure for a bladder infection…Hello Ocean Spray
Cucumbers Again? I thought we did this in August. Round 2!
Eggplant              My boyfriend hates these. Not like I won’t try to hide them in a…
Figs                       Hell no. I’m not peeling anymore. It’s worse than peeling a grape.
Garlic YAY! I put it in everything anyway.
Gooseberries       I thought they only existed in Nursery Rhymes.
Grapes                  Does wine count?
Huckleberries     Like Huckleberry Fin?
Kohlrabi               Koh-what?
Lovage                  Maybe they make you fall in love.
Lychee nuts         Sounds scary.
Mushrooms The magical kind? Probably not, bummer.
Nectarines           Yep, next to the peaches… Oh wait they’re gone. Sad day.
Okra                     Fried okra here I come!
Oysters                I think BP just wiped out all hopes of that.
Pears                   Screw apples, I have one of these a day.
Peas                    If I get to be the princess I’ll eat whatever you want.
Pistachios          YUM-O. Roasted and flavored how you like it.
Plums                 Dark, juicy and stains everything it touches.
Pumpkins           OH MY GOD! THERE ARE HERE! OBSESSED. No really?
Tomatoes My Mom will be excited.
Watermelon       So glad they figured out how to make them seedless.
Zucchini             So I guess they are a summer and fall squash?

Oh my god we’re done. Wow that was a lot. Whew. Sorry, need to catch my breath. It feels like I was trying to blow those leaves off the tree myself. I’m going to go pass out now with my night cocktail (going for the double), but join me this month on our adventures into the Fall season and hopefully cooler weather!
